Disha Carlisle is an Indian and English actress and model known primarily for her work in American and British films. She has won an Academy Award for her role as Nina Sayers in psychological thriller Black Swan. As of 2016, she is the first actress to portray DC character Wonder Woman in live action film.

early life Born in Mumbai, India to actor Robert Carlisle and professor Sonia Kapoor who met and married while Carlisle was filming in the city. Relocating to London at age three, Disha would spend her childhood there and considers it her hometown. She maintains a dual citizenship for the UK and India. In 1997 as Disha entered her teenage years, Robert and Sonia divorced following rumors of infidelity. Disha would then split her time between parents and locations in London and Mumbai until completing secondary school a year early at age 17.

While accepted into more than one university, Disha instead accepted a modeling contract as she craved the freedom to carve a path away from her parent's influence and also to support herself along the way. Growing successful in modeling, her intention was to after some time settle back down for her studies, but instead she found herself auditioning for small acting roles "just to try it out".

Career Her screen debut would be in Kingdom of Heaven, a visually impressive film with mixed critical response. She credits working with esteemed directors including Christopher Nolan and Sofia Coppola early in her career with much of her success as a budding actress, but it was in 2010 with the film Black Swan that she would gain global recognition for her role as the troubled ballet dancer. Though she did have prior dance experience, Disha underwent vigorous training and instruction for the film, losing 20 pounds. She would go on to win many of her first awards including the Golden Globe Award, the Academy Award for Best Actress, and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. The attention garnered for the role would open doors for her in several more prominant films and she continues to work steadily as a rising star.

In 2013 it was rumored that Disha was in negotiations to make a Bollywood debut, but she refused to sign any multifilm contracts and was not satisfied with the roles offered. In 2016, she began playing Wonder Woman in the DC Extended Universe films, starting with Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and next as the lead in Wonder Woman.

personal life Disha maintains a veil of privacy over much of her life outside work, which has often led to speculation over her involvements. She was briefly linked to costar Daniel Craig during promotion for Quantum of Solace in 2008. From 2013 to 2014 she was in a public relationship with Indian actor Raj Varma, who she knew growing up. There were initial rumors of the relationship being staged, but both parties denied this. The two have since stated they continue to be friends. In early 2016, she was rumored to be dating English writer James Roland, but this was never confirmed.

She is an outspoken feminist and advocate for causes including animal rights and the prevention of human trafficking. She is a vegetarian, and is fluent in both Hindi and English. After working on her degree in English Literature & Drama on and off for years prior, in 2013 she graduated from the University of London. While she continues to keep a home in London, as of 2015 she purchased a house in Los Angeles.

media perception & image Though she was met with initial skepticism when making the leap from model to actress, Disha now carries a polished and professional public image of an actress dedicated to her craft. She is selective in choosing her roles and generally has critics' favor. Her controlled image as a nonthreatening beauty has been off putting to some who see her persona as artificial, but she still has large numbers who admire that she seems to be focused on her work rather than the social aspects of Hollywood. She has been named as both a role model and to some a sex symbol, but is resistant to both titles.

✖ Has both a private (@dishydi12) and public (@dishacarlisle) instagram. Public twitter is mostly used for promotion, but she has been known to do spontaneous Q&As and sometimes goes on RT binges of fanart related to her current project. Made a snapchat but has yet to use it, no Facebook.
✖ Has been approached several times about working in Bollywood, but has turned them down each time.
✖ Credits spending her formative teenage years under her mother's strict household with keeping her out of trouble that she may have otherwise if she spent more time with her father in the industry.
✖ Says that she was watching Katharine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story when she realized she wanted to try acting.
